With our already jam-packed schedules, it’s impossible to think of giving away your time and energy for free without a financial reward. However, volunteering is beneficial for several reasons, and the best part about it is that it doesn’t have to take up much of your time and effort. Volunteering benefits not only the community or the person receiving the assistance but also the individual or the organization offering the help. If you want to give back to the community, here are a few volunteer opportunities in Columbia Town Center.
Howard County-Wear Orange Community Event
Join the Wear Orange Foundation on June 7, 4-5 p.m., at the Columbia Lakefront Plaza for the 10th annual Wear Orange Day event to honor gun violence survivors and to build community with those working to end gun violence. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange and join after the program to walk around Lake Kittamaqundi to commemorate the lives lost to gun violence. We are grateful to The Columbia Association, the event’s official corporate sponsor. This event will be held rain or shine. Feel free to bring a lawn chair and stay for Lakefront Live Movie Night at 7 pm. Visit their website for more information.
The Village in Howard Outreach Presentation
Learn about The Village In Howard- a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to decreasing social isolation, increasing social connectedness, and promoting healthy aging by providing social, cultural, and educational activities planned by members. In addition, they have a very robust group of volunteers who give back to the community and the organization. All Our Kids Mentoring & Tutoring
Children need dependable, consistent support. By becoming an AOK tutor or volunteer, you can become the trusted adult for a child who needs that extra support. Meeting regularly with a struggling student, respecting them, and showing up for them can have a huge impact on their life – and on yours, too!
Volunteers do not need an educational background. AOK volunteers come from all kinds of professions. They must be flexible, friendly, and positive and can work one-on-one with a student, as classroom support, or at an after-school program. Benefits of being a mentor include:
- Increased self-esteem
- A sense of accomplishment
- New networks of volunteers
- Insight into childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood
- Increased patience and improved supervisory skills
- Improved emotional IQ as you tune into the feelings of your mentee.
- New perspectives about people from different races, backgrounds, and cultures.
