Staying Cool in Columbia columbia town center

Here are some creative tips for staying cool in the summer without breaking the bank.

There is nothing better than enjoying the heat of summer, especially after those long, chilly winter and spring months. However, the heat and humidity can quickly leave you wondering how to stay cool. While blasting the air conditioning at home is one way to lower your body temperature, there are plenty of ways to stay cool in the summer that won’t rack up your electricity bill. Here are some creative tips for staying cool in the summer without breaking the bank.

Take a Dip

This is obvious, but you can beat the summer heat by swimming at a local pool or finding a lake, swimming hole, or other natural body of water to swim in. The cool water will keep you comfortable for the entire day while you can still enjoy much of what nature offers. If you’re looking for a fun opportunity to swim with your friends and neighbors, the Faulkner Ridge Pool is hosting their annual community pool party on Wednesday, July 31, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Free entrance, food, and music for Town Center and Wilde Lake residents. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Pool membership is not required, but space is limited, and pre-registration is required. You must provide proof of residency to participate. If you have any questions, call 410-730-4744 or email [email protected]. Register for tickets here.

Evening Hikes

If you are an avid hiker and like to sleep until the late morning hours, trying to hike without getting burnt is difficult. Instead, consider hiking in the evenings. You can go right after sunset when the sky’s colors are still beautiful, and the temperatures are significantly cooler.

The Lake Kittamaqundi loop is within walking distance of Whole Foods, the Central Library branch, and Columbia Mall. At 1.4 miles long, it’s the perfect distance for an evening stroll where the kids can burn off energy, with a playground to play in afterward.

Picnic in the Shade

This is such a simple idea but one that is often overlooked. Pack a picnic, find a nice shady spot, and spread out! The shade keeps you cooler than you think, and packing fresh, cold fruit is one of the most refreshing things during a hot day. Get the whole family together to play some park-friendly games or just hang out on a picnic blanket with some tasty snacks and good music.
