Staying active and fit can have a major impact on both your physical and mental health. Participating in physical activity in your local community can provide various benefits to help you live healthier and happier lives. Regular exercise in adults can reduce the risk of several health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes. In addition, the CDC has reported that the loss of strength and stamina as we age is, in part, caused by reduced physical activity. Here are some ways you can stay active and healthy in Columbia Town Center.
Nature Hikes
In Columbia, there’s so much nature to explore in our own backyards. There are many beautiful walking trails and parks that are ideal for exercise. Most of these trails are relatively short, easy to navigate, and include kid-friendly features. The Lake Kittamaqundi loop is within walking distance of Whole Foods, the Central Library branch, Columbia Mall, and many restaurants with outdoor seating. At 1.4 miles long, it’s the perfect distance for kids to burn off energy, with a playground to play in afterward. Centennial Park has everything to make it the ideal park: lakes, wooded areas, open fields, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a playground. The trail loop around the lake is 2.6 miles long but can be modified for younger kids.
Cool Off in the Pool
Swimming is an excellent form of exercise, and it is a perfect summer activity for the whole family! If you’re looking for a fun opportunity to swim with your friends and neighbors, the Faulkner Ridge Pool is hosting their annual community pool party on Wednesday, July 31, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Free entrance, food, and music for Town Center and Wilde Lake residents. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Pool membership is not required, but space is limited, and pre-registration is required. You must provide proof of residency to participate. If you have any questions, call 410-730-4744 or email [email protected]. Register for tickets here.
Play a Round of Tennis
Tennis and pickleball have become very popular recently, and for good reason! These sports are beginner-friendly and don’t cost much to get started. The courts at Vantage Point Park at 5440 Vantage Point Road are public “community courts” as classified by the Columbia Association (CA). They are for Columbia residents and are to be shared by both tennis and pickleball players, both young and old. You can play a few rounds with a friend, or get a group of neighbors together to create a pickleball club.
