Parent’s Guide to Summer Activities for Kids columbia town center

Below are some summer activities for kids that will keep things fun and enriching.

Whether you work from home, are a stay-at-home parent, or work outside of the house, you need some practical summer activities for your kids to keep them busy, and learning, during the summer. Otherwise, you risk them getting too much screen time, which is not good for their mental or physical health development. Below are some summer activities for kids that will keep things fun and enriching, as well as some kid-friendly events happening in Columbia.

Have a Picnic in the Park

Picnics are an excellent way to spend quality time outdoors while enjoying good food and conversation. Pack up your favorite snacks or lunch items, spread out a blanket, and find a spot in the park! Afterward, make it even more fun by playing outdoor games like frisbee or tag.

The Lake Kittamaqundi loop is within walking distance of Whole Foods. At 1.4 miles long, it’s the perfect distance for kids to burn off energy, with a playground to play in afterward. Centennial Park is the perfect backdrop for your family picnic: lakes, wooded areas, open fields, and a playground for your kids to play and enjoy nature.

Host a Movie Night

Summer activities don’t have to be solely educational. Summer is for relaxing, after all. Get the family together, break out the good snacks, and watch your favorite films together. Alternatively, put on an outdoor movie night with blankets and popcorn to make it extra special.

If you want a more lively movie night, bring the kids to Lakefront Live in Columbia for their weekly movie nights. All movies begin at dusk– around 8:30 pm in early summer and 8-8:15 pm in late summer. Movie nights are hosted by Mr. B, who has been sharing his love for movies with the Columbia community for nearly 50 years. Visit their website for the full schedule.

Grow Plants

This activity is fun for every age group. Visit your local garden center to choose some flowers, vegetables, or herbs best suited for your climate and soil type. Plant them in individual pots and have your kids help water them each day. They’ll eventually see their plants grow over time! Gardening is also an excellent way to teach kids about sustainability and responsibility while instilling a sense of pride when they watch their plants flourish.

If you have older kids who want a bigger challenge, consider planting trees in your area. Tree-Mendous Maryland is a program aimed at helping citizens restore tree cover on public land and community open space in Maryland. With permission from land owners, volunteers can plant trees at schools, parks, local open spaces, and more. Gather the whole family and plant a tree today to clean the air and water and beautify Columbia!
