While we should strive for a greener future every day, Earth Day is a wonderful time to inspire everyone to become more environmentally friendly. Around the world, friends and neighbors participate in demonstrations and events to protect our Earth while promoting a stronger and more thoughtful society. Earth Day is on April 22nd, but Columbia Town Center is hosting events this month to celebrate our beautiful planet.
Howard County Green Fest
Saturday, April 13, 10 am-3 pm
GreenFest is Howard County’s largest celebration of Earth Day. The event aims to connect residents with the resources that local businesses, non-profits, and government provide to help anyone be a good steward of the environment. There will be giveaways, document shredding, and a native plant sale!
Tree Planting
Tree planting is a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day. When it comes to protecting the climate, trees are the real heroes—and planting them has consistently ranked as a top climate change solution. After all, trees help clean the air and water, stabilize the soil to prevent erosion, provide habitat for biodiversity, absorb carbon, and much more!
Tree-Mendous in Maryland aims to help residents have access to affordable trees to plant on their public lands. With permission from land owners, volunteers can plant trees at schools, state and community parks, local open spaces, street trees, and more. Gather your friends and family and plant a tree today to clean your air and beautify your neighborhood!
Earth Day Celebration at Merriweather District
Merriweather Pavillion is kicking off the season with its 2nd Annual Earth Day Celebration! Bring the whole family to enjoy fun giveaways, interactive activities, delicious food, and great music. Here are some of the fun activities planned:
- The first 100 families to arrive at the event will receive a native tree seedling
- Enjoy a complimentary yoga class hosted by Yoga Six at 10 am
- Complimentary butterfly wing cape and antennae for the first 100 children onsite
- Shop at our Sustainable Market of eco-friendly products by local artisans
- Face painting, glitter tattoos, DIY workshops, delicious restaurants, and more!
Local Cleanups
Cleaning up your local neighborhood is a great way to celebrate Earth Day. Not only are you protecting the environment by keeping it clean, you’re also helping keep your town beautiful. Town Center Community Association is hosting a community cleanup on the multi-use path around Lake Kittamaqundi. Participants should meet on the patio above the lakefront fountain near Millie Bailey Park and Whole Foods on April 13th at 10:00 am.
