Establishing more environmentally friendly habits at home is a great way to live more sustainably. Still, you can extend your reach by expanding those initiatives to the land and people around you. Look beyond your home and help those in your community improve the environment. You don’t have to be an “activist” to do some good for your neighborhood. Here are a few ways to improve the environment in and around Columbia Town Center.
Plant a Tree
Find an area in your neighborhood perfect for some tall, woody plants or those currently suffering from soil erosion. Planting new trees is a great way to let nature take hold again and get a group of neighbors working together. If you get a few neighbors to join, you can ask a local nursery for a discount or donation. When your saplings grow larger, they’ll help cool the neighborhood, combat climate change, foster living habitats, and clean the air.
Pick Up Litter
Look for litter around your neighborhood or in public spaces. While walking or jogging around Columbia Town Center, carry a small trash bag to pick up waste. Trash that isn’t bound for recycling or a landfill often ends up in a stream, harming aquatic life. Participate in an organized litter or river cleanup event, or create your own!
Take Care of Open Spaces
Columbia Association owns and maintains more than 3,600 acres of open space and 114 miles of interconnected pathways. The parks, paths, and facilities allow residents to enjoy the outdoors, live a healthier and more active lifestyle, and gather with friends and family. If your property backs onto CA open space, you may enjoy increased privacy from neighbors, visits from wildlife, blackberries and black raspberries just a few steps away, and the magic of thousands of fireflies lighting up your summer nights. The many advantages of living next to open space are balanced by a responsibility to be a good steward of our natural areas so they can function as needed. Help CA preserve these open spaces by respecting property lines, cleaning up after your pets, and avoiding harmful fertilizers or pesticides. To learn more about CA’s open spaces, click here.
Columbia Corps and More Fair
“Columbia Corps and More Fair” will happen on Wednesday, August 28th, from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM. This is a tabling event where you can meet members of various environmental groups that work with CA and within the Columbia community, learn about their work, and how you can join, including CA’s Weed Warriors, Stream Waders, Pull and Plant activities, as well as local village CARES groups.
Come and learn more about the different groups and activities you can be a part of. You will have the opportunity to talk with other volunteers about their experiences, find what interests you, and sign up to get involved. Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP here.
