Landlord key for unlocking house is plugged into the door

Here are some ways new Town Center residents can get involved in the community.

If you are a new resident of Columbia Town Center, it’s easy to feel a bit wary of going out and meeting new people. But, participating in community activities provides an underrated sense of connection, solidarity, and belonging. Make it one of your goals this year to be more active in the neighborhood by doing your part. Even small steps, like getting to know your neighbors more personally, can matter. If everyone does their part and tries their best, you will find yourself smiling a lot more when you’re out for a walk. Here are some ways new Town Center residents can get involved in the community.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

If you’ve just recently moved in, learning a little bit about your neighbors can benefit you in a number of ways. A sense of belonging can improve physical and mental health — and knowing your neighbors can even help your community be more resilient after a disaster. Plus, it’s always nice to have someone who can grab a package off your porch or lend you a crucial ingredient in a pinch. You don’t have to make a grand gesture; just stop by and say hello. Let your neighbors know you’re happy to pick up their mail and water plants when they’re out of town. And if someone in your neighborhood has trouble mowing the lawn or raking leaves, offer to do it for them.

Apply to Serve on the Board

If you want to influence policy-making, vet homeowners’ concerns, or strengthen leadership, applying to serve on the Town Center Board of Directors is the best way to do so. Getting there may take a sizable amount of time, energy, and resources, but it’s the best way to make your voice heard. As a homeowner, you have a significant stake in the value and safety of your community. Getting involved in politics doesn’t have to be intimidating. You can help to bring about change and advocate for important issues, such as affordable housing, innovative development, expanding diversity initiatives, and more.

Look for Volunteer Opportunities

Donating your free time and helping solve problems within your capabilities is a surefire way to become more involved. There are different community programs and activities that do not require any skills to join. Non-profit organizations and charities largely depend on volunteers to accomplish most activities, so your time and contribution are highly appreciated. In addition to supporting the cause, you will build your resume and networks. Town Center Community Association needs volunteers to assist in many different areas, including:

  • Young People Events
  • Elections
  • Senior Events
  • Gardening Experts
  • Safety Patrols
