Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada and, more recently, has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Local Involvement
The Howard County Center of African American Culture is available for tours by appointment only when they reopen by calling 410-715-1921. The Center is located at 5434 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, MD. Learn about the rich history of blacks in Howard County and view artifacts, vintage clothing, and materials that tell a story of struggle, excellence, and survival. Visit the website here
In honor of Black History Month, the Columbia Association, the Howard County Center for African American Culture, and the Howard County Library System invite you to listen to the personal journeys of Black leaders in our community, including opening remarks from Calvin Ball, Howard County Executive. Hear what pivotal moments led them to lead in their path to public service. Hear guest speakers at the Equity Resources Center at the Howard County Central Branch Public Library on February 28th at 7 pm. Register for the event here.
In celebration of Black History Month, Columbia Art Center Galleries is showcasing the talents of local black artists in a show inspired by the 2022 Black History Month theme, “Black Health and Wellness.” Pieces include overall wellness and inspiration for managing through the pandemic. State Involvement:
Visit the Maryland Tourism site and journey through Maryland to honor the lives of American heroes. Celebrate the people, progress, art, and inspiration of these African-American stories in Maryland. The tourism site has activities throughout the State where you can celebrate the significant contributions of African Americans to our state, our culture, and our future.
Columbia residents should also consider visiting the Harriett Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, taking a driving tour on the Eastern Shore of sites important in the life of Frederick Douglas, or joining in on activities at your local church or community center.
