It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada and, more recently, has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Here are some Black History Month events and info sessions happening around Columbia.

Howard County Center of African American Culture

The Howard County Center of African American Culture is available for tours by appointment only when it reopens by calling 410-715-1921.

The Center is located at 5434 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, MD. Learn about the rich history of African Americans in Howard County and view artifacts, vintage clothing, and materials that tell a story of struggle, excellence, and survival. Visit the website here.

Museum Walk at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center

Discover the rich history and culture of our community with a guided tour through the only High School for African American students during segregation, Harriet Tubman Jr.-Sr. High School. A perfect program for history buffs, those interested in the history of Howard County, and those interested in the history of African Americans within the Howard County community.

Visit the museum on Wednesday, February 25th, from 6:30 – 8 PM. 

Preregistration is encouraged but not required.

Hand Dancing and Bop Dance Class with Shirley Duncan

Celebrate Black History Month with us at our Free Hand Dancing and Bop Dance Class with Shirley Duncan at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center on February 19th from 6 pm to 8 pm. Step into the world of traditional rhythm and blues swing dance as you learn iconic moves like The Bop and The Walk, explore their cultural roots, and enhance posture, coordination, and flow while mastering effortless, graceful spins.

African Art Museum of Maryland

The African Art Museum of Maryland is one of only three museums in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to African art. Located in Columbia, the museum is renowned for its extensive collection and recognition as one of the top cultural institutions in the state. It’s the perfect place to celebrate African heritage through the lens of art.
