Seniors Ride Free on RTA Buses
Howard County residents aged 60 and older can now ride Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) buses for free on all fixed-route services. This helps our older adults access healthcare, grocery stores, community events, and more — safely and independently.
As an age-friendly county, free fares for older adults align with broader efforts to support aging with dignity and keep older residents connected to their community. Older adults can learn more about how to get a Free Ride Card by visiting the RTA website.
Howard County’s Guaranteed Basic Income Pilot Program
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced the launch of Howard County’s first transformative Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) pilot program in partnership with the Community Action Council of Howard County (CAC).
Through this program, CAC has enrolled 20 families in a program that offers monthly economic assistance, wrap-around services, and programming sessions from community partners. Through this pilot program, CAC provides participating families with $1,000 per month for 12 months to prioritize household needs that will ultimately improve overall economic stability. Clothing Donations Around Columbia
Your child grew 12 inches and three sizes over the summer and now many of last year’s clothes and shoes no longer fit. Instead of tossing those old clothes out in the trash – yes, the Bureau finds lots of clothing in its Landfill trash collection during its annual waste sort – consider donating them or utilizing one of these retail take-back programs:
- H&M – Drop items off at the store. They even accept half a pair of socks!
- Madewell – Print a free shipping label for ThredUp.
- Levi’s – Drop your jeans off at any store.
- Carter’s – Recycle your non-donatable baby and kid clothes. Find a location.
