3 New Year’s Resolutions for the Whole Neighborhood columbia town center

Here are a few ways to turn your New Year’s resolutions into opportunities to grow alongside your neighbors.

Now that the new year is here, you may already be thinking about resolutions to start 2026 strong. Your neighbors may share many of the same goals for personal growth and development as you, so here are a few ways to turn your New Year’s resolutions into opportunities to grow alongside them and strengthen the community.

Exercise More

Plan a group fitness class with a professional instructor. If you don’t have the budget or gym space available for an on-site class, reach out to a fitness facility near your community and ask about promotional trials that you could offer to residents. In addition to getting a great workout, you might just initiate a vendor partnership that will keep residents moving all year long.

The Columbia Association offers a variety of fitness classes to suit all tastes and skill levels. They will be having an information session on January 20th for members to learn how to make the most of their CA membership, get answers to any burning questions, and ensure they’re set for success. There will be light refreshments, prizes, and giveaways of guest passes. Plus, if you bring a friend, you’ll be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a free month of membership. And if your friend decides to join, both of you will score a free month!

Learn a Skill or Hobby

Look for an interactive class to learn something hands-on and creative together, such as painting,  DIY terrariums, or calligraphy classes, but the possibilities are endless. Visit Historic Oakland Manor on January 18th for a Relaxing Evening of Candle Making where you can unwind with a glass of wine or a warm, snuggly beverage. Tap into your inner artist as we explore the captivating world of candle making in this in-person event.

Participants will be guided by our expert from Candles by Candy, who will walk you through the basics of candle making and the candle-making process. Learn how to blend fragrance oils to create your own unique scent and melt and pour wax to create your very own special candle

Read More Books

Reading is one of the best things you can do for your brain and mental state. It is also a very easy hobby you can start and share with friends. Consider starting a monthly book club. Plan out your reading list ahead of time, share it with neighbors, and pick a time to discuss your thoughts and reactions together. Or take a family trip to the library. Libraries are a place where everyone can learn, grow, and connect. Howard County is in the midst of building a new central library that will serve as a vibrant community anchor in the heart of the County.
